Food Security and Mass Migration

December 2023

Sent to the Today Programme on BBC Radio 4

I wonder if thought is being given to the very real possibility, in our view, of mass migration increasing rapidly due to climate change? It is now acknowledged by some scientists that climate change is occurring more quickly than had been expected, and so what if more people in countries around the world had to move because there was no clean water and no food because the land was unfit to be used? So, I am not asking about the usual regions that are affected by famine, but other areas of the World, including Europe, because of the increase and the speed of climate related events.

Food shortage and clean water could become a central issue in a very short space of time and have a global reach and effect. Mass migration for these reasons will cause a massive headache for authorities, but perhaps this will force a coming together and a more humane and organised approach to tackling these problems, with more compassion shown to people who are desperate to survive and simply trying to find the essentials.

Perhaps there will also be a realisation of how we have been abusing our planet for too long.
