New Beginnings

Written for The Persimmon Tree Short Takes on the subject of starting over.

Is the World about to destroy itself? It is surely in the minds of many that there is a battle between good and evil. This has come more into focus in recent months, especially in politics, religion and war. The egos of many are blind to what they do, with no feeling for those around them in their own country and further afield. The battle is not new; many times in Earth’s history, such struggles between good and evil have played out, but the crescendo of our present strife, informed by our past behaviour, is an opportunity for all thinking, sensitive people to look anew at the values we hold. How can we find a way forward with the spiritual strength and purpose we all carry within us? How can we start afresh?

I am sure many of us are considering our planet too, which is showing its imbalance through climate-changing events, pollution in many forms, and poisoning of all that is precious for life, such as our soil, our seas and our air. Perhaps, more importantly, are our minds infected with destructive thoughts that spread like a virus into our souls? There is a growing awareness, along with fear and unease, that things are not right. Sparks of light are growing stronger in their passion for change. We should all feel responsible to some degree.

Our scientists also acknowledge the speed of change on climate issues, particularly the rising temperatures. Seeing the harrowing pictures and listening to the commentary of the lands parched with thirst, flooded with torrents of water, or devastated by wildfires, consuming homes, livelihoods and people, it is easy to be fearful and wonder what we can do. Resources would help ease some of these issues, but even if those in authority were willing to accept the change of priorities and act accordingly for the good of our planet, are we not too late? Have we passed the tipping point? Do we need to experience changes that really make a difference to our behaviour and force us to rethink our values and priorities?

Testing times bring out the best and the worst in people, but if we can take practical steps to weather the coming storm by urgently storing food, water, and other essentials and encouraging others to do likewise, this will help those we love and who live close by, bringing people together as a community in strength and resilience.

As with all storms, in the due season, it will pass, and there will be peace. But what will we have learnt? Understanding is the fruit of experience and can inform how we go forward. Has the Great Mind of the Universe tapestried new beginnings for this world?
